An unexpected incident during a major upgrade has forced the Schwandorf waste-to-energy plant to suspend commercial waste intake. Find out what led to the shutdown and who is affected.
Key Takeaways
- The Schwandorf waste-to-energy plant has suspended commercial waste intake due to a furnace failure during an upgrade.
- This suspension applies to commercial and construction waste from 11 March 2026 to 13 March 2026 to ensure disposal security.
- Only one of the two furnace lines is operational, causing excess waste delivery volumes and reaching bunker capacity limits.
- Private waste deliveries will still be accepted at the facility, as will medical waste with prior approval.
- All diversion options for excess waste have been exhausted by the plant operator.
The ZMS association has suspended the acceptance of commercial, construction, and contingent waste at all its waste transfer stations. The measure is effective from Wednesday, 11 March 2026, until Friday, 13 March 2026, ZMS announced. It is intended to ensure disposal security within the association’s territory.
Furnace Failure Amidst Upgrade
The decision follows an incident at the Schwandorf waste-to-energy (WtE) plant, where only one of two furnace lines is currently operational. The limitation is the result of a failure in furnace line 1, which occurred during conversion work for the “Triphönix” project.
Due to the reduced incineration capacity and a concurrent increase in waste delivery volumes, the plant’s bunker capacity has been exceeded. The operator states that all options for diverting waste to other facilities have been exhausted.
Exceptions For Medical And Private Waste
The suspension does not affect deliveries from private cars, which will continue to be accepted at the waste transfer stations and the Schwandorf WtE plant during normal opening hours.
Furthermore, hygienically sensitive waste from medical facilities, such as hospitals and care homes, can still be delivered. However, this requires prior registration and corresponding approval.
