Key Takeaways

  • Energetika Celje, which runs Slovenia’s only municipal Waste-to-Energy plant, has joined Cewep.
  • Toplarna Celje, commissioned in 2009, treats up to 40,000 tonnes of non-recyclable municipal waste a year from the Savinjska region.
  • Its CHP output is 40,000–45,000 MWh of heat and 9,000 MWh of electricity, serving 7,300 households and 350 business customers.
  • It has processed over 467,300 tonnes to date, diverting close to one million m³ from landfill.
  • Cewep’s membership now spans 25 countries.

European WtE operator association Cewep has welcomed Energetika Celje as its newest member. Energetika Celje operates Toplarna Celje, Slovenia’s only municipal Waste-to-Energy plant. Commissioned in 2009, the plant treats the non-recyclable fraction of municipal waste from the Savinjska region. Its annual capacity is up to 40,000 tonnes.

Through combined heat and power (CHP) production, the plant recovers around 40,000 to 45,000 MWh of district heat and around 9,000 MWh of electricity each year. The heat is supplied to roughly 7,300 households and 350 commercial and public customers via the Celje district heating network.

Since commissioning, Toplarna Celje has processed more than 467,300 tonnes of non-recyclable waste, diverting close to one million cubic metres from landfill.

Membership Now Spans 25 Countries

“We are very pleased to welcome Slovenia and Energetika Celje to Cewep. Waste-to-Energy has an important role to play in Europe’s integrated waste and energy systems, particularly by providing a safe and efficient solution for residual waste while recovering valuable energy and materials. We look forward to sharing knowledge and experience with our new Slovenian member,” said Cewep-President Paul De Bruycker.

Uroš Rošer, chief executive of Energetika Celje, called the membership an important milestone for the company and for Slovenia. He said that, as the operator of Slovenia’s only Waste-to-Energy plant, the company looked forward to contributing its experience of integrating energy recovery with district heating and to learning from leading European operators. According to Rošer, Waste-to-Energy in Celje is “an integral part of a local circular energy system that provides reliable heat and electricity, reduces dependence on fossil fuels and supports the city’s decarbonisation”.

With Energetika Celje, Cewep’s membership now spans 25 countries, united by high environmental standards, low emissions and the efficient recovery of energy from residual waste that cannot be sustainably recycled.
