Viridor has secured ISO 55001 certification for its asset management system, becoming the first Energy from Waste (EfW) company in the United Kingdom to achieve the internationally recognised standard for its entire EfW fleet, the company announced.

ISO 55001 is a global standard that outlines the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving an asset management system. It necessitates that organisations adopt a systematic, lifecycle approach to the management of their physical assets.

For Viridor’s facilities, this involves the proactive management of plant assets to ensure consistent performance against operational, environmental, and compliance requirements.

Systematic Approach To Asset Management

The company reports that it is already observing operational benefits from the implementation of the framework. These include improved visibility of maintenance expenditure, enhanced cross-functional working, and a reinforced approach to supply chain and contractor performance.

Chris Lockhart, Asset and Engineering Support Manager at Viridor, stated: “This certification is a major milestone for Viridor and would not have been possible without the expertise and dedication of a huge number of colleagues across the business. Operational excellence and environmental responsibility go hand in hand, and this certificate further demonstrates this.”

Framework For Continual Improvement

Operating within a highly regulated environment necessitates a robust framework to embed continual improvement and proactive risk management. ISO 55001 provides this by ensuring asset management activities are aligned with business objectives through data-driven decision-making. This process supports investment planning and optimises asset performance throughout their lifecycle.

To obtain the certification, Viridor initially conducted a third-party gap analysis to identify areas requiring improvement. Subsequently, the business formulated a five-year asset management improvement roadmap. This roadmap is currently being implemented through a Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP), supported by an Asset Management Policy to ensure employees understand the importance of asset management discipline.
