Enfinium has completed a major upgrade at its Ferrybridge 1 energy-from-waste plant to improve performance and reliability.

Key Takeaways
- Enfinium upgraded its Ferrybridge 1 energy-from-waste plant to enhance performance and reliability.
- The facility processes 725,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually, generating up to 85MW of electricity.
- The upgrade included replacing super heaters for the first time in a decade and renewing refractory tiles.
- A new insulated access system improves maintenance efficiency and reduces manual handling risks.
- Enfinium plans to invest in carbon capture technology to support the UK’s Net Zero transition.
Energy-from-waste (EfW) operator Enfinium has completed an upgrade programme at its Ferrybridge 1 facility in West Yorkshire. The works, which took place throughout April and May 2026, were aimed at maintaining performance, reliability, and efficiency at the plant.
Operational since 2015, the Ferrybridge 1 facility processes up to 725,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually. It generates up to 85MW of electricity, sufficient to power approximately 170,000 homes and businesses.
Complex Engineering Works
The core of the project included the first replacement of the plant’s super heaters in a decade. Additionally, refractory tiles were renewed to protect boiler integrity, and repairs were conducted on the site’s 1.2MW induced draft fan, which involved replacing corroded pipework.
The programme also introduced a new lightweight insulated access system developed by the Ferrybridge maintenance team. This system replaces traditional heavy boiler access bricks, reducing manual handling risks and improving maintenance efficiency, the British company announced.
Commitment to High Standards
Enfinium COO Jane Atkinson stated that the Ferrybridge upgrade was the largest programme of works the company has undertaken at one of its facilities in the last decade. She commented on the efficiency and engineering demonstrated by the teams involved. “We remain committed to maintaining all Enfinium facilities to the highest standards, operating responsibly and safeguarding the environment in our surrounding communities,” Atkinson said.
Steve Tosney, Plant Manager at Ferrybridge 1, added that such programmes rely on detailed planning and disciplined execution. He noted that the team “made full use of the outage window to deliver a complex set of upgrades safely and efficiently.”
Enfinium is also investing in the future of the Ferrybridge sites, with plans to deploy carbon capture and storage technology as part of a wider decarbonisation strategy. This aligns with the company’s goal to support the UK’s transition to Net Zero through carbon removals.
