Plant opertator Enfinium has announced a 25-year agreement with SSE to become the anchor supplier of low-carbon heat from its Waste-to-Energy plant Skelton Grange, UK. The heat will be supplied into the Aire Valley Heat Network, supporting local industry and the expansion of low-carbon heat infrastructure across Leeds.

Under the terms of the long-term agreement, Enfinium will provide an initial 6MWth of bulk heat. This will allow SSE to expand the heat network to serve more local businesses and potentially residential homes in the surrounding area in the future.

Phased Expansion From 2027

The bulk heat supply is scheduled to become operational from the first quarter of 2027. Subsequent expansion will be carried out in phases, corresponding to the growth of the Aire Valley Heat Network and the demand from local users.

The initiative is designed to support a circular economy approach in the Aire Valley by converting unrecyclable waste into energy for local infrastructure. The agreement builds on the first phase of the Aire Valley Heat and Power Network, which has received £10.81 million from the Government’s Green Heat Network Fund.

Supporting Regional Decarbonisation Goals

Mike Maudsley, Chief Executive Officer at Enfinium, stated that with Skelton Grange as the anchor supplier, the project keeps energy local, reduces carbon emissions, and improves resource utilisation. He described it as “the circular economy in action”.

Nathan Sanders, Managing Director for Distributed Energy at SSE, commented that the agreement is a positive milestone for the low-carbon heat network. “When constructed, the project will unlock new and plentiful heat sources, continuing to help West Yorkshire Combined Authority meet its ambitions of a net zero carbon region by 2038”, Sanders said.
