Viridor is building the Thameside Energy Recovery Facility on the former Cargill sweeteners site on the north-west side of Tilbury Docks in Thurrock, Essex, next to the Tilbury Green Power biomass plant.

Viridor bought the development rights for the consented ‘Tilbury Docks Phase 2’ project from the Irish utility ESB in September 2022, had the environmental permit varied in January 2024 to a single-line inclined moving-grate plant for 379,658 tonnes per year (43.3 t/h, 126.4 MW thermal, up to 44 MW electrical) and reached financial close in November 2024.

Kanadevia Inova is building the plant under a turnkey EPC contract over about 42 months. By 2026 the waste bunker, stack and main concrete structure will be complete and commercial operation is targeted for 2028. The plant is designed CHP-ready with steam and hot-water pass-outs, and carbon capture is considered a possible future option.
