Viridor’s Record Year Comes With a Catch, ESG Report Shows

Britain’s energy-from-waste operator Viridor has published the final report of its three-year ESG strategy. It tells a story of record performance – and of plans that did not survive contact with the market.

Viridor ESG report 26

Viridor’s energy recovery plants have never treated more residual waste or generated more electricity than in the financial year 2025/26. A new facility in Scotland and a programme to extract more throughput from the existing fleet lie behind the figures, and the report explains in some detail how the company managed it.

Yet the same document shows that emissions from Viridor’s own operations grew faster than throughput, and it gives the reasons. It describes a carbon capture project at the UK’s largest energy-from-waste plant that has had to be rethought, a new heat network in Cardiff that received its first low-carbon heat, and two further plants that are moving towards construction.

It also records what went wrong: a recycling technology that worked but could not pay its way, and permit breaches at a London plant that cost the site its compliance rating.

The full article looks at the numbers behind the headlines – from availability and carbon intensity to bottom ash, flue gas residues and the preparations for the UK Emissions Trading Scheme – and at what Viridor’s ESG Director says the company has learned.
