The KVA Winterthur next to Grüze station is owned by the City of Winterthur. It is operated by its municipal utility Stadtwerk Winterthur. The two lines treat around 190,000 tonnes or more of municipal and commercial waste per year. They cover about one fifth of the city’s electricity and heat demand. Line 2, in service since 1993, is to be replaced between 2026 and 2031. This will be done under a CHF 293 million project approved by voters in 2024. As a result, the project will raise district heat output by about 30 %.
