In addition to his role as CEO of plant operator EEW, Timo Poppe is taking on an advisory role at US infrastructure investor I Squared Capital. Poppe announced this in a post on the platform LinkedIn. As Senior Policy Advisor, he says he will contribute his experience in identifying, assessing and developing infrastructure investments in Europe.

“Timo Poppe’s appointment as Senior Policy Advisor at I Squared Capital is in addition to his role as CEO of EEW Energy from Waste GmbH,” EEW told WtE Monitor in response to an enquiry. “It recognises his many years of experience in the transformation of critical infrastructure. This changes nothing about his responsibility for EEW, the company’s strategic direction or its ownership structure,” the company said.

I Squared Capital has now confirmed the appointment in its own press release. Poppe will advise the firm on identifying, assessing and developing infrastructure investments in Europe, the investor said.

More Than 20 Years of Experience with Infrastructure

According to Poppe, he has worked on infrastructure topics for more than 20 years. In various roles, he says he has seen how important efficient networks, a reliable energy supply and long-term infrastructure investment are for economic development and social stability, Poppe wrote in his post.

Europe is entering a new phase of infrastructure development, according to Poppe in his posting. Digitalisation, industrial competitiveness, the energy transition and the modernisation of central supply systems require not only capital but also operational experience and consistent implementation.

“This is precisely where I Squared Capital comes in. As a globally active infrastructure investor, the company develops investment platforms in the areas of energy and utilities, transport and logistics, and digital, environmental and social infrastructure,” Poppe writes.

Investment Platforms in Several Areas

According to its own description, I Squared Capital is a globally active infrastructure investor. The company develops investment platforms in the areas of energy and utilities, transport and logistics, and digital, environmental and social infrastructure.

I Squared Capital currently employs twelve Senior Policy Advisors. Most of them are based in North America.

Poppe explained that he wished to bring his experience in the fields of the energy sector, the circular economy and digital infrastructure to I Squared Capital. At the same time, he expects to gain new insights into markets, technologies and investment decisions, which will also benefit his role as managing director of EEW.

“Timo brings the perspective of someone who has led complex infrastructure businesses through growth and transformation, and his insights will be a tremendous asset as we continue expanding our activities across the region,” said Mohammed El Gazzar, Senior Partner at I Squared Capital.

Before joining EEW, Poppe was founder and managing director of Palladio Kommunal GmbH. He previously held senior positions at energy suppliers EWE and swb, where, according to I Squared Capital, he led major investment and transformation programmes in energy, network infrastructure and digitalisation. He has also served on the supervisory boards of several infrastructure companies, including as chairman of the supervisory boards of EWE Netz GmbH, Harzwasserwerke and hanseWasser Bremen.
