Key Takeaways

  • Ivago used a roughly 120m crane to replace worn chimney flues at its Ghent Waste-to-Energy plant.
  • Two new flues were assembled on site and lowered into the existing structure in mid-June.
  • The work formed part of an annual two-week maintenance shutdown.
  • A new ozone system was added to the flue gas cleaning process to further reduce NOx emissions.
  • The new flues create extra insulating space, boosting the plant’s long-term durability and reliability.

Ivago used a specialised crane approximately 120 metres tall to carry out maintenance on the chimney flues of its Waste-to-Energy plant in Ghent in mid-June. Two new flues were assembled on site and then lowered into the existing structure, a technically complex operation carried out at height, Ivago announced.

Part of annual maintenance shutdown

The works formed part of a scheduled maintenance period. Ivago halts the installation for around two weeks each year to carry out maintenance and renovation work.

This year’s programme included an expansion of the flue gas cleaning system, aimed at further reducing NOx emissions. A new installation using ozone will inject the gas into the flue gas channels, allowing more NOx to be removed from the exhaust gases.

Wear prompted flue replacement

Inspections found that the existing flues showed signs of wear. Ivago decided to replace them to keep the plant operating safely and reliably.

The new flues were fitted inside the existing structure, creating an additional insulating space. This adds to the plant’s durability and strengthens its long-term operational reliability.
