Waste management in Spain is a dynamic field marked by significant developments and challenges. In recent years, the country has made strides in managing municipal solid waste (MSW) while facing various hurdles in reaching EU recycling and disposal targets.
Key Takeaways
- Spain generated 467 kg of municipal solid waste per capita in 2022, below the EU average, but has seen a slight decline in waste generation over the past decade.
- While the recycling rate improved to 39% by 2022, it remains under the EU target of 55% by 2025, highlighting ongoing challenges in waste management.
- The landfill tax aims to reduce reliance on landfills by creating financial disincentives, but the incineration tax also complicates waste treatment strategies.
- Spain is implementing mandatory separate collection of specific waste streams starting in January 2024, aiming for more effective recycling systems.
- The ‘España Circular 2030’ strategy sets ambitious goals to reduce waste generation and halve food waste, pushing towards a circular economy in Spain.
