EEW secures another top sustainability rating — but what does “Prime” actually take to earn in a high-risk industry?

Key Takeaways
- EEW improved its score in ISS Stoxx’s Corporate Rating, again achieving Prime status with a B- rating.
- Ratings range from A+ (excellent) to D- (poor); Prime requires a sector-specific threshold between C and B-. –B-, the highest threshold, applies to the highest-risk sectors — EEW’s industry among them.
- The rating complements EEW’s Green Financing Framework and €555m Green Bond.
- It assesses sustainability, governance and ESG transparency, confirming EEW as an industry leader.
The German plant operator EEW has improved its overall rating in the latest ISS Stoxx Sustainability Corporate Rating. According to the company, EEW has once again achieved ‘Prime’ status with a ‘B-’ rating.
What Prime Status And a B- Rating Mean
ISS Stoxx grades companies on a twelve-point scale running from A+, denoting excellent performance, to D-, denoting poor performance. Prime status is awarded when a company’s rating meets or exceeds an industry-specific threshold, which is set between C and B- depending on the sustainability risk profile of its sector, according to ISS Stoxx’s Corporate Rating methodology. B- is the highest of these thresholds and applies to industries with the greatest sustainability risk exposure, so EEW’s Prime status reflects performance at the top end of what is required in its sector.
Broader Assessment Of Sustainability Performance
The rating complements EEW’s sustainable finance activities, including its recently updated Green Financing Framework and the placement of a €555 million Green Bond.
While the Framework defines which investments are eligible for green financing, the Corporate Rating provides a broader assessment of EEW’s sustainability performance, corporate governance and ESG transparency. It also gives investors and other capital market participants an independent reference point for assessing the company’s sustainability performance and long-term positioning.
“Sustainable finance requires clear criteria for the use of proceeds as well as confidence in a company’s sustainability performance. The rating provides investors and financing partners with an additional external point of reference and supports our ambition to systematically embed sustainability across our corporate processes,” said Stefan Schmidt, chief financial officer of the EEW Group.
Recognised As An Industry Leader
With Prime status, EEW is classified as one of the sustainability leaders in its industry under the ISS Stoxx methodology. The assessment is conducted annually, based on industry-specific environmental, social and governance criteria.
