The Kehrichtheizkraftwerk (KHK) St. Gallen is operated by Entsorgung St.Gallen, a unit of the City of St. Gallen. It treats around 75,000 tonnes of household, industrial and commercial waste per year from 41 municipalities. These municipalities are in the cantons of St. Gallen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden and Thurgau. The plant went into operation in 1972 as KVA St. Gallen and was renamed Kehrichtheizkraftwerk in 2007. Its heat is supplied to the district heating network of St.Galler Stadtwerke (sgsw). This network receives a large share of its heat demand from the plant.
