Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) is the municipal utility of the university city of Gießen in central Hesse, wholly owned by the City of Gießen. Alongside electricity, gas, water, district heating, buses and swimming baths, SWG runs two plants that burn refuse-derived fuel (RDF): the 25,000 t/a heating plant TREA I (2010) and the 28,670 t/a combined heat and power plant TREA II, which is held by the subsidiary Heizkraftwerk Gießen GmbH.
The group is now reshaping its heat supply: the PowerLahn river-water heat pump and CHP scheme started up in mid-2026, a heat transformation plan targets CO2-neutral district heat, and the district heating network is being extended into Gießen’s neighbouring towns.
Key Takeaways
- Municipal stock corporation: Stadtwerke Gießen was founded in 1938 and has been an Aktiengesellschaft since 2002; the Universitätsstadt Gießen is the sole shareholder.
- Two RDF plants on one site: TREA I (heat only, operating since 2010) and TREA II (steam turbine plus two gas CHP units, inaugurated April 2019, in regular operation since December 2022) feed Gießen’s district heating network with heat from processed commercial and industrial waste from central Hesse.
- Heizkraftwerk Gießen GmbH became a full subsidiary in 2024, when SWG bought the remaining shares from the State of Hesse; the company was founded in 2003 together with Gießen University Hospital.
- Broad utility group: SWG supplies electricity, gas, water and district heat in Gießen and the Mittelhessen region, owns the grid operator Mittelhessen Netz and the bus company MIT.BUS, and operates biogas plants, CHP units and the city’s swimming baths.
- Heat transition under way: the PowerLahn iKWK plant with three river-water heat pumps went into operation at the end of June 2026; a heat transformation plan adopted in 2024 sets the route to CO2-neutral district heating by 2045, and the network is being extended to Wilsonstraße (2026) and the town of Linden (concession signed September 2026).
