HKW Blumenthal GmbH operates a refuse-derived-fuel combined heat and power plant on the former Bremer Wollkämmerei site in Bremen-Blumenthal. The 65,000 t/a plant is wholly owned by AWG Bassum, the waste company of Landkreis Diepholz, and burns the high-calorific fraction from AWG’s residual waste treatment plant in Bassum.

After a EUR 13.5 million conversion completed in 2025, the plant now feeds the first district heating network in Bremen-Nord, which enercity Contracting is building out until 2035. The Klinikum Bremen-Nord has been supplied since June 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Founded in 2004 as a joint venture of AWG Bassum and Bremer Woll-Kämmerei AG (BWK) to convert BWK’s coal-fired works power station to refuse-derived fuel; the company has been wholly owned by AWG since 2009, which in turn belongs entirely to Landkreis Diepholz.
  • One grate-fired line with 31 MW thermal input and a permit for 65,000 t/a of RDF, commissioned in June 2005, produces electricity for the public grid and heat for the Kämmerei-Quartier in Bremen-Blumenthal.
  • Fuel comes from AWG’s own RABA mechanical-biological treatment plant in Bassum, which makes the Bremen plant part of the public waste disposal system of the district of Diepholz under the district’s waste bylaw.
  • A long-term heat partnership with Enercity Contracting, signed on 9 February 2023 and firmed up with a heat supply contract on 29 June 2023, triggered a one-year conversion of the plant with a new turbine, 15 MW of heat extraction and backup boilers.
  • The Bremen-Nord district heating network has been under construction since early 2025; the Klinikum Bremen-Nord was connected on 22 June 2026, three Blumenthal schools follow in the second half of 2026 and further phases start in early 2027.
